The Hierarchy of Human Needs

Though not a perfect theory, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs gives at least a simple picture of the Requirements of Human existence.  Maslow’s theory is that the human being will be driven to fulfill these needs until they are fulfilled.  It is also believed that most humans will seek need fulfillment at the bottom of the pyramid before being able to focus his/her attention on higher objectives.  Here’s a diagram of the Hierarchy, and I’ll give some comments afterwards.

The interesting thing is that most of the needs are fulfilled through ones involvement with human society.  So, when one is deprived of human society, all aspects of life will be broken.

The Shariah of Islam is 90% about the relationships between people.  Even our ‘Ibaada, which we do for Allah, typically involves Jama’a (group).  So, are you better able to understand how the convert’s life can be horribly disrupted, turned upside down, or possibly destroyed?

Im surprised more people are not commenting on your work with this site, ahumdulilah, I am a revert, and I will say, everything your saying is dead on right. My family does not yet know Im a muslim, I live alone, and I am waiting until i have enough social supports around me to do so. Trouble is, I cannot find those supports. I feel so let down by the Umma in USA. There needs to be more work involved in helping reverts. It feels exhausting to be alone. Sometimes I just want to go back to a normal life, and then beg allah swt for forgiviness for not wearing hijab.

Your not alone in your observations.
