Ghafla (Heedlessness) as Culture

Allah ta’ala tells us in Surat Yunus, verse 7:

Verily, those who hope not for their meeting with Us, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present world, and those who are heedless of Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.),  Their abode is the Fire, because of the (evil) they earned.

The actual word Ghafla is what is translated as “heedless” or “negligent”.

The typical Muslim these days is born into a culture of ghafla.  The vast majority of their family members, friends, educators, public officials, etc. have shown them that one need not be responsible for anything to call oneself “Muslim”.

Ghafla is contagious.  Spending time in the company of ghafileen will weaken ones resolve to adhere to the requirements of Deen.  Hence, Muslim families and entire Musim communities or countries become infected.

These days, you can go to so many masaajid and see Muslims sitting, doing absolutely nothing. If you come back after 5 years, he’ll still be sitting doing nothing.  It’s horrifying to see how the culture of Ghafla has completely destroyed the initiative and willpower of the Muslims.  So much needs to be done, but they can’t stand-up on 2 feet to begin a life of DOING something.

May Allah save us from such a condition.  Allah ta’ala tells us:

And keep yourself (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.

If there were only some way to get the Muslim OUT of the environment of Ghafla long enough for him to become healthy and active again !
