The Call of Islam

We notice that light emanates from the sun, and theoretically it travels outward into the infinite beyond.  The small amount captured by the moon is enough to light the earth well on a dark night.  The Message of Allah ta’ala begins with ب (ba), stretches itself into بسم الله, and  completes the profound introduction of Creator to Created with بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم .  The 7 oft-repeated verses continue their instruction, through which the reader will gain Faith by mere recitation, will gain perfection of self through obedience to its words, will gain wisdom through its lifelong contemplation, and may gain Ihsaan through its full Realization, that one may worship Allah as he sees Him, or at least with the realization that we are seen by HIm, the Reality of which will blind the soul to any thought of other Worship.  Do the angels who see Allah ever consider His disobedience ?

Rasulullah’s introduction to Allah ta’ala began near the other end of The Book.  Jibreel, with 600 wings that covered the sky from East to West, had spoken Allah’s first calling to Rasulullah, informing him to repeat His Calling:  “Iqraa” (Proclaim !)  Rasulullah began his daily and nightly efforts of calling humanity toward Allah, and calling Allah toward humanity.    Through tears, sweat, blood, thirst, hunger, strife, poverty, fear, and the heart-wrenching pains of rejection, the people were brought singly at first, then in groups, then in multitudes, then in masses to the realization that their success lies in the hand of no other than Allah.

As is usual with promises of  eternal wealth, salvation, and redemption, the first to heed the call were found either among those who had been closest to Rasulullah, who already knew that he could only ever be the Bearer of Truth, or among the poor, who already have no other reason to deny the hope of such great offers.  The offers of Gardens and Fruits and Raiment of Honor, of never-ending flows of water, are usually enough to entice the poor from the distractions and toils of their miserable existence.  But to convert the Chiefs, the Hoarders, the Poets, the Murderers – what kind of Revolution would it take ?  How could Hind bint Utbah, who hated Rasulullah so much, who had such a blood-lust that she beat the drums of war to urge the slaughter of the Sahabah, cut the ears and noses from the dead, and ate the liver of Rasulullah’s uncle Hamza, how could such a person ever become a Believer, a follower?

The wisdom of Rasulullah’s relentless effort, with the Help of Allah from the Unseen, was such that it created a tidal wave of Iman that eventually threatened the very existence of  the bitterest enemies of Islam.  From the few hundred that fled Mecca to Medina, to the army of 10,000 strong that returned 8 years later, to the 124,000 who made the Farewell Pilgrimage 2 years after that, the exponential swell of the Community of Believers can only be understood through acceptance of Divine Providence and Divine Help, and by respecting the intelligence and persistence of history’s greatest leader.

Rasulullah’s army surrounded Mecca, catching the Quraishi enemies between the hammer and anvil with no way of escape.  The night before the seige, Abu Sufyan became suddenly wise, embracing Islam after 2 decades of enmity.  With minimal fighting, the Holy City was captured and returned to the authority of the Muwahidun (those who affirm Monotheism).  The defeated people gathered to face sentence, to receive the justice from the Judge whom they had derided and stoned, whose companions they had starved and slaughtered, whose Faith they had denied and insulted.  Then Muhammad turning to the people said:

“O Quraish, what do you think of the treatment that I should accord you?”

And they said, “Mercy, O Prophet of Allah. We expect nothing but good from you.”

Thereupon Muhammad s.a.w declared:

“I speak to you in the same words that Yūsuf spoke to his brothers. This day there is no reproof against you; Go your way, for you are free.”

And so, their hearts were completely over-turned !  They witnessed first-hand the Nobility of the one they had spit their contempt upon.  They affirmed that Rasulullah had no ulterior motives.  He was not seeking revenge.  He was NOT seeking lordship over them!  He was seeking the freedom and illumination of their hearts and minds ONLY.  Every word he had told them from the beginning, 20 years earlier, was true.  As Allah ta’ala says:

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ    “I have not sent you except as a Mercy for all the Worlds”

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ  فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ    “And verily you (stand) on an exalted character.  So, soon you shall see, and they shall also see.”

This great victory was not the end of struggle.  Mecca was NOT the objective !  Through the battles of Mu’tah (3,000 Muslims against 200,000 Romanized Arabs), and Tabuk, Rasulullah demonstrated how to crack open an empire to let the Nur of Iman inside, how the few and weak could take on the strong and many, if their cause was The Cause of Allah.  And by the time of the Farewell Pilgrimage, Allah ta’ala could reveal :

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا  “Today have I perfected your Deen for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your Deen”.  The example of Rasulullah for all of humanity had been explicitly and thoroughly proven.

So, now the question comes to us.  As darkness gathers all around to smother all life from the soul of humanity, as we find ourselves in much the same condition as in the Days of Jahiliya(before Islam), whose example should we take?  Which WAY has been proven to revolutionize the hearts of Mankind, to bring the Help of Allah from the Unseen, to bring the eventual Victory of Haqq over Batil (Truth over Delusion).

Every letter of Qur’an is Truth that must be accepted whole-heartedly.

Every Sunnah of Rasulullah is the Superior Way.

The Purpose of Human Life has been made Perfectly Clear.

Every struggle or difficulty for that Purpose will be rewarded.

Hedaya and Tawfeeq are only from Allah !  They can only be bargained for with Sacrifice.
